Chapter 18

“Do you have time to stop by my office later today? I have the contract ready,” Brandt said to Lucy after yoga class the next morning.

He’d actually already drawn it up before going to her house the night before, but hadn’t wanted to give it to her then and make it seem like he’d assumed she’d say yes.

“Sure. I can come after my noon class if that works for you.”

“Actually, why don’t we meet at May’s Café and grab some lunch? That way I can give you the rundown on the three fundraisers.”

“You mean give me my homework?” Lucy said with a hint of a smile.

“I guess you could look at it that way.”

“That works. I can meet you. But you’re buying.”

“You drive a hard bargain,” Brandt teased and then headed out before she could change her mind.

He felt a bit of elation that he was trying to temper, lest he get ahead of himself. When Brandt walked into his office at the township building forty-five minutes later, his assistant motioned for him to come over to her desk. She was just finishing up a call.

“Make sure you look at your calendar. I had to make a couple updates today. Nothing major, just changing around some appointment times. The file on the expansion plan for the greenspace is on your desk in preparation for that meeting. Oh, and David Harper called and wants you to call him back.”

“Thanks, Brenda.” He poured himself a cup of coffee, taking it back to his office. He figured he would call David and get it out of the way. He wanted to assure David that he wasn’t going to stand in the way of making the Foster House a historical landmark and, in fact, supported the decision.

Brandt looked at the Post-it Brenda had written David’s number on and picked up the phone and dialed. He thought, for once, this would be an easy conversation. David had a history of being difficult and unwilling to compromise, so Brandt was glad to avoid an argument.

“Hello? Harper here.”

“Hey David, it’s Brandt. I got a
